They are totally cute and the kids LOVE them. They have already chosen their favorites (for now). We have even named them. At first I was going to name them things like Pot Pie (potty), Salad Sandwich (sally), Noodle soup (noodie), Cordon blue (cordie)...you get the picture. After watching the kids with them I decided we better not. Instead we came up with some more respectable names.
Now initially I only wanted 3 or 4. I got suckered in by how cute they were. I have also learned that there is a 95% chance of getting a male (rooster) and an 80% chance of one or more dying. The extra are my insurance. With my luck they will all stay females and I will have more than I initially wanted to have.
These babies are fun to watch. They eat like crazy for about 20 minutes...top off with water then run over to sit under the heat lamp and go narcoleptic. It is funny to watch them. They hold still and close thier eyes...then suddenly thier little heads start to drop...just like a kid that accidentally falls asleep in school. They often jerk upright again but sometimes their heads just rest on the ground. I might have to try to catch this on camera.Here is what they will look like when they are mature. This might explain thier names a little. Hopefully they will lay us some nutritious eggs and provide for some entertainment. So far so good.
The reddish ones are Rhode Island Reds: They will lay brown eggs.
The center black chicks are Barred Rocks: Also lay brown eggs.
And the last ones are Ameraucanas or Easter Egger: These will lay a green to blue egg.
